Get to Know Your Sewing Machine
Have a sewing machine but not quite sure what all those buttons, dials and settings actually do? Maybe your machine is brand new, has been sitting in a closet for years, or you simply want to feel more confident using it.
Bring your sewing machine to the studio for this hands-on orientation class and learn how to set it up, understand its basic functions and start sewing with confidence.

During this class, we’ll cover:
- The basic parts and functions of your sewing machine
- How to correctly thread your machine and wind a bobbin
- Choosing and changing needles
- Understanding thread tension
- Selecting and adjusting common stitches
- Stitch length and width
- Changing and using basic presser feet
- Basic machine maintenance and cleaning
- Troubleshooting common problems like skipped stitches, thread nests and broken thread
- Tips for choosing the right needle, thread and settings for different fabrics
We’ll finish by sewing some practice samples so you can experiment with your machine’s settings and become more comfortable using it.
Who is this class for?
Absolute beginners, new machine owners, anyone returning to sewing after a long break, or anyone who owns a machine but feels like they’re only using a fraction of what it can do.
What to bring:
Your sewing machine, power cord/foot pedal, bobbins, accessories and your machine manual if you have it. Fabric and thread for practice will be provided unless otherwise noted.
Please note: This is an orientation and skills class rather than a repair service. We’re happy to help troubleshoot basic sewing and setup issues, but machines requiring mechanical repair or servicing may need to be taken to a qualified technician.

Get to Know Your Sewing Machine is offered once each month, making it a great first step before joining one of our beginner sewing classes, workshops or Open Studio sessions.
