Adult Sewing 101

4-Class Beginner Sewing Series | No Experience Required

Always wanted to learn how to sew but aren’t sure where to begin? Adult Sewing 101 is designed to take you from “I don’t really know what any of these buttons do” to confidently working on projects at the sewing machine.

This is a hands-on, project-based learning series. Rather than spending four classes working through demonstrations and exercises, you’ll learn sewing techniques while actually making things.

Class One: Get to Know Your Machine

We start at the very beginning.

Your first class focuses on sewing machine orientation, including:

• Understanding the parts of the sewing machine
• Threading the machine
• Winding and loading a bobbin
• Selecting and adjusting stitches
• Controlling speed
• Understanding needles, presser feet and thread
• Basic machine troubleshooting
• Sewing safely and confidently

Then we put those skills to work.

Classes Two Through Four: Learn by Making

Each remaining class is centred around a project selected to introduce new techniques and build on what you’ve already learned.

Throughout the series, you’ll develop skills including:

• Cutting and preparing fabric
• Understanding seam allowances
• Sewing straight lines, curves and corners
• Pinning and clipping
• Finishing seams
• Working with different fabrics
• Reading basic patterns and project instructions
• Understanding common sewing terminology
• Troubleshooting as you sew

By the end of the four-class series, you’ll have completed a minimum of three finished projects — and, more importantly, you’ll understand the skills and techniques you used to make them.

Projects may change between sessions, so there’s always something new to make and learn.

Materials

Materials are not included in registration.

Depending on the projects chosen for your session, expect approximately $20–$60 in materials for the full four-class series.

You’ll receive a supply list before your session begins, and required materials will be available for purchase through Fabric Stash.

No previous sewing experience is required, and you do not need to own a sewing machine.
