Description
Youth Sewing 101 – Ages 10–18
4-Class Beginner Sewing Series | No Experience Required
Youth Sewing 101 is a hands-on introduction to sewing designed to help young makers become comfortable, capable and creative at the sewing machine.
This isn’t a class where students simply follow a set of instructions to make the same project. Instead, we learn by making. Each project is carefully chosen to introduce new sewing techniques and build on skills learned in previous classes.
What We’ll Learn
Our first class begins with a complete sewing machine orientation. Students will learn how the machine works, how to thread it, wind and insert a bobbin, select basic stitches, control sewing speed and sew safely and confidently.
From there, we get sewing!
Over the remaining classes, students will work through a variety of projects while learning skills such as:
- Sewing straight lines, curves and corners
- Understanding seam allowances
- Pinning, clipping and preparing fabric
- Basic cutting and pattern skills
- Working with different fabrics
- Finishing seams and edges
- Following project instructions
- Troubleshooting common sewing problems
- Building confidence using a sewing machine independently
Students will complete a minimum of three finished projects during the four-class session.
Projects may change from one session to another, which means returning students can continue developing their skills while making something new.
Materials
Materials are not included in registration.
Depending on the projects selected for the session, expect approximately $20–$60 in materials for the full four-class series.
A complete supply list will be provided before the session begins, and required materials will be available for purchase at a discounted rate through Fabric Stash.
Who Is This Class For?
Youth Sewing 101 is designed for ages 10–18 and is suitable for complete beginners as well as young sewists who have tried sewing before but want to build stronger foundational skills.
No sewing machine or previous sewing experience is required.
